Minerva Chronograph Pocket Watch restoration

Mechanical Watch Repair in South Africa
Two Minerva chronograph watches were recently entrusted to us for restoration. Both were
completely non functional, although cosmetically very well preserved. They had not been used for
approximately forty years and were originally used to time a rally car many years ago. The
intention was to have them professionally serviced before being offered for sale.

Chronographs are mechanically complex, incorporating additional wheels, levers, and coupling
systems beyond a standard time only movement. Each watch was carefully disassembled and
inspected. We found surface corrosion around the stem areas on both pieces. One showed signs
of historic moisture beneath the dial, while the other had light corrosion under the main bridge and
ratchet wheel. Fortunately, all corrosion was superficial and responded well to careful cleaning.

Both movements were fully stripped, cleaned, correctly lubricated, and reassembled with
attention given to precise chronograph engagement and reset alignment. After regulation and
several days on test, both watches demonstrated strong amplitude and accurate timekeeping,
reflecting the quality of Minerva chronographs from this period.

Cosmetically, the dials were in excellent original condition and required no restoration. The cases
showed honest wear consistent with age. The crystals were polished to restore clarity, and the
cases were ultrasonically cleaned and lightly polished in a conservative manner, preserving
original geometry and character.

Once we were satisfied with both performance and presentation, the watches were carefully
packaged. Each was accompanied by a pre service report and a certificate of restoration detailing
the work carried out. They were then returned to a very pleased owner, now running correctly and
ready for their next chapter.
