Restoring a Kohler Dual Time Zone Globe Clock
This rare Kohler dual time zone globe clock arrived completely non functional,
which is a condition we often see. The owner requested a full repair and service
while keeping the original exterior patina, an excellent decision for a clock
whose age has created a deep and genuine character.

This is an uncommon and highly distinctive piece. The clock is shaped like a
world globe with dials on two opposing sides, each showing a different time
zone. Traces of gold gilding remain on several surfaces, and the dial appears to
incorporate both gold and silver elements.

Diagnosing the Fault
Once the movement was disassembled and inspected, it became clear that the
clock could not be fully wound. Two teeth on the mainspring barrel were
severely worn, preventing proper engagement with the mating wheel. This type
of damage is often caused by overwinding. Further examination revealed that
the barrel itself was slightly warped, which meant the two halves of the wheel
would not mesh evenly.

To repair this, the worn teeth were filed down and a clean cavity was created. A
precisely fitted brass insert was made and carefully soldered into place. New
teeth were then cut into this insert, restoring correct engagement.
Straightening the distorted barrel completed the repair and resolved the
primary fault.

Servicing the Movement
With the main issue addressed, the remainder of the movement was stripped,
cleaned, inspected, and fully serviced.

During testing, low amplitude was observed. The cause was a deformation in
the hairspring. The hairspring was removed from the balance and carefully
straightened, a slow and delicate process that required four hours. This
significantly improved amplitude and allowed the movement to be regulated
correctly.

The movement was then placed on test for two weeks to ensure stable
operation.

Conserving the Exterior
The stand and exterior brass components were cleaned in a conservative
manner, removing many years of accumulated dust and grime while preserving
the clock’s original patina. The glass was also thoroughly cleaned and restored
to clarity.

Completion
The clock was reassembled with care and returned to its owner, now running
reliably while still retaining the distinguished appearance it has earned over its
lifetime.
