Mechanical Watch and Stopwatch Servicing in South Africa
This Heuer stopwatch arrived fully functional, though cosmetically somewhat worn from years of
use. The owner requested a full mechanical service, and we recommended a light cosmetic clean
to improve presentation while preserving originality.
During disassembly, it became clear that the stopwatch had seen extensive use. The central
seconds hand was seized onto its arbor and required careful removal. There were also signs of
previous servicing carried out with limited care, including overtightened screws, tool marks on
bridges, and marred screw heads. The dial showed minor enamel cracking, consistent with age.
Once the seized hand was safely freed, the remainder of the service proceeded in a
straightforward manner. The movement was fully disassembled and cleaned to remove aged oils,
grease, and accumulated dust, using a combination of manual brushing and ultrasonic cleaning. It
was then methodically reassembled and lubricated with correct application at all friction points.
After servicing, the stopwatch ran reliably and with improved accuracy. It was placed on test for
various durations, including extended runs exceeding thirty minutes, to confirm stable operation.
The case and crystal were polished conservatively and ultrasonically cleaned, maintaining the
character of the piece while improving clarity and presentation. The movement was then returned
to its case and fully reassembled.
Documentation was prepared, including a pre service report and a certificate of restoration
outlining the work completed.
The stopwatch was delivered fully functional and performing better than before, to a very pleased
owner.
